DANCING BEAUTY

The star of the Italian dance scene Silvia Gribaudi is coming to ONE DANCE WEEK 2020 with her newest piece GRACES.

With generous humor and radical empathy, Silvia Gribaudi brings up the concept of human imperfections in the form of dance. Full of lightness, irony and freedom, her work meets dance and theater to paint the unique nature of the body and the beauty of each and every one of us.

Silvia Gribaudi is one of the few artists who dares to be funny, rude and sympathetic at the same time. In her latest performance GRACES she examines the conventions surrounding the body image and gender roles in a comic manner. Gribaudi draws inspiration from the ancient Haritas (or the Three Graces), daughters of Zeus, who embody joy, charm and beauty, and in particular the non-classical sculpture of Antonio Kanova, made between 1812 and 1817. With dance and words, but especially with warmth and ease, the performance will reveal what lies at the heart of humanity.

Silvia is the Italian prophet of free body. Not a tumbling, gymnastic body, which is so connected to strength and muscles, but a truly free body, that has set itself free from the obligations and duties to which so many cultures have forced it.

The choreographer meets the age-old symbolic figure of beauty and various current stereotypes and boundaries imposed by contemporary society. The traditional theatrical format frames the performance, but soon the audience realizes that it is also an instrument that Gribaudi uses with irony. On stage, four dancers will play with reality and fiction and question the canons of beauty.

For Gribaudi, dance is a way of being. Born in Turin, she specializes in performing arts and runs social workshops focused on the human diversity and uniqueness of each individual. Before entering the world of contemporary dance, Gribaudi is engaged in classical ballet and is part of the company of the Theater La Fenice in Venice. After her body goes through changes and does not meet the strict requirements of classical ballet, Gribaudi gets inspired by contemporary dance and the beauty of individuality.

In 2009 she created the performance A corpo Libero, which won the Giovane Danza d’autore audience and jury award and was selected by Aerowaves Dance Atross Europe, The Venice Biennale, Dublin Dance Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Dance Victoria Canada, Do Disturb Festival in Paris and many more.
