ONE DANCE WEEK is pleased to be the local partner and organizer of SPOTLIGHT: USA, а platform for American dance, which will be held in Plovdiv from 26 to 28 March.
American dance showcase – nine companies, three days, a complete programпе of performances, workshops, and discussions – in Bulgaria. Until recently, an event of this magnitude seemed impossible. Because of the thousands of kilometers, the paths less traveled, the many unknowns.
But here it comes. In Plovdiv.
In Plovdiv, because here we are at home. It is here where contemporary dance meets a growing open-minded audience.
An audience to be joined by dozens of artistic directors from Europe and around the world.
So that together we can see some of the best American dancers and choreographers under the spotlight.
This is SPOTLIGHT: USA.
From Los Angeles to New York, from Seattle to Philadelphia – these are nine bright pieces of the colorful jigsaw of performing arts in the U.S.
From rock ballet to activism salsa, hip-hop, and street dance, this is the diversity of styles and influences through which American choreographers and dancers articulate bold messages and unifying causes.
From traditions to the experiment, from minimalism to dance theater and visual arts, this is a bright representation of the contemporary dance from its own homeland.
This is a huge effort. This is a dream come true. Let’s live it together.
SPOTLIGHT: USA is organized by American Dance Abroad and ONE DANCE WEEK in partnership with the Plovdiv Municipality and is conducted in support of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019. A partner of the project is America for Bulgaria Foundation. The organizers would also like to express their gratitude to the American Embassy in Sofia, the Trust for Mutual Understanding and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.
More than 50 U.S. dance companies applied for participation in the SPOTLIGHT: USA and the aforementioned nine received the highest marks from the prestigious international jury. Members of the jury were Marc Olivé López, theatre programmer, Mercat de les Flors (Spain); Yvona Kreuzmannová, founder and director of Tanec Praha (Czech Republic); Felix Wittek, former director, internationale tanzmesse nrw (Germany); Karen Cheung, director, China Dance Development Project at the City Contemporary Dance Company (Hong Kong); Balázs Arato, manager, National Dance Theater (Hungary); and Antonello Tudesco, artistic director, CollettivoNada (Italy).
