CHECK THE CZECHS is the special programme part of the 10th edition of ONE DANCE WEEK, which will put into focus the Czech contemporary performance scene. The program is curated by Yvona Kreuzmannová – the engine behind almost all performance phenomena in the Czech Republic and a member of international networks, including IETM, European Dancehouse Network, co-founder and associate director of Aerowaves and partner of Be SpectACTive !.
The CHECK THE CZECHS module will present a total of three shows – GUIDE on September 24 at 19:30, THE NARRATOR on October 8 at 16:30 and ONE STEP BEFORE THE FALL on October 8 at 20:00. All the spectacles from the program of ONE DANCE WEEK will be performed at Boris Hristov House of Culture in Plovdiv.
The unique Muhammad Ali is coming to life on October 8 at 20:00 in Plovdiv in the champion’s shows ONE STEP BEFORE THE FALL by Spitfire Company where the dance art is using heavyweight punches to wake up the fighter in each of us. The story of perhaps the most famous boxer in history, Muhammad Ali – from the rise in the ring to the burning out of a legend struck by Parkinson’s disease – is actually the story of anyone who has ever suffered the blows of life. The stage has been transformed into a boxing ring, where, as in life, victories and losses are changing, and fate leads a pointless duel against the refusal to surrender. With quick and sharp movements, with a speed of spinning leading to dizziness, Marketa Vacovska (Dancer of the Year – Czech Republic, 2013) is embroidering the stage with tension, while the music and vocals of Lenka Dusilova further exacerbate the emotions of the performance. The artist’s disobedience and insistence to rise after the defeat builds up the story, and the spectacle raises the audience on their feet and fully deserves their enthusiastic applause.
ONE STEP BEFORE THE FALL debuts in 2012 in Trutnov, Czech Republic, to win a year later the Herald Angel Award of the British newspaper “The Herald”, taking all ovations at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. The Concept and choreography are by Marketa Vacovska and Petr Bohac, founder and artistic director of Spitfire Company.
It’s time for a theatrical knockout. In this spectacle, winning awards and fans from Stockholm to Beijing, two women through dance and music fight in the boxing ring for their fate. Painful mastery. – The Herald

Spitfire Company is an artistic platform for contemporary dance theater, as well as one of the most progressive creative teams in the Czech Republic. Behind the success of their performances is an iron formula – originality, mixing of genres and the constant introduction of new forms in the theatrical art. The company focuses on the physical presence on the stage, the visual impact and the disproportion in character building. All this distinguishes Spitfire Company and explains the success of their productions.
