Kaori Ito: A Father – Daughter Dance

Family. Absence. Silence. Distance. Authority. A father and a daughter are trying to connect once again, this time on the dance scene. In this emotional dance duet, inspired by the unspoken questions in a typical Japanese family, many can actually recognize themselves. The performance I DANCE BECAUSE I DO NOT TRUST WORDS by choreographer Kaori Ito and sculptor Hiroshi Ito, her father, will be presented for the first time in Bulgaria on September 28ht in the Black Box of the Drama Theater – Plovdiv.

Is life more beautiful now? Why don’t you like my friends? Do you love my mother? Are you afraid of showing feelings? Kaori Ito is looking for answers from her father, a well-established sculptor. Today, art seems to hold them together more strongly than emotions. Within 60 minutes, we will witness a special encounter between two people from one family and two artists from different generations and artistic fields. They will seek to build a bridge through the universal language of the dance.

“Closer to the Dance Theatre Arts, where James Thierrée, Alain Platel, Aurélien Bory and Denis Podalydès stand side by side, Kaori Ito (…) has created a spectacular production, humanist and emotional, dedicated to her father and their relationship.
– Rosita Boisseau, LE MONDE

Born in Japan, Kaori Ito studied Classical Ballet from the age of five. At the age of twenty, she moves to New York to integrate the dance department of the Purchase College. After returning to Tokyo, she graduates in sociology and gets a grant to go back to New York as part of the Japanese Government’s Program of Overseas Studies for Artists. She studies at the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. Ito has parcipated in many dance companies in the USA and Europe, especially France.

She has worked with leading choreographers and artist such as Sidi Larbi, Guy Cassiers, Aurélien Bory, Alain Platel, James Thierrée and others. Ito’s original creations have been well-accepted on many important stages across the worlds, and she is awarded France’s l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

A famous Japanese sculptor, Hiroshi Ito created the stage design of the performance. One of his valuable comments has powered Kaori Ito’s passion for contemporary dance: “you needn’t move within the space, but make space be moved by your dance”.
